Scream ★★★★★

31 Days of Horror (2021): Day 21

From the 70s, with movies like "Black Christmas" or "Halloween", right through the 80's, with "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Friday the 13th", the slasher subgenre dominated the horror genre. But coming into the 90's, the subgenre lost its spark and was flooded with bad low budget copycats or uninspired sequels. It took Wes Craven & Kevin Williamson to revive slashers with a clever script, which took the established rules and turned them upside down. Killing off the biggest star in the opening scene made it clear that no one was safe and makes "Scream" one of the most intense slasher experiences. Even 25 years later, "Scream" stands the test of time, thanks to its great direction and script, an iconic cast, characters & villain and a pinch of dark humor that never takes away from the horror.
