Licorice Pizza 2021
It’s really impossible for me to discuss this film (even though my thoughts on the film itself will be minimal) without discussing how I came to see it, so I’ll start from the beginning.
On the day the first trailer for Licorice Pizza came out, I watched it a good 4-5 times within the first couple hours. I was beyond excited, but also tremendously sad knowing I’d have to wait to see it. A number of watches later, however, and…

Babylon 2022
Absolute fucking dynamite. Chazelle’s Eyes Wide Shut, Inherent Vice, Jackie Brown, After Hours, Miami Vice, etc.; an undeservedly ridiculed gem that people will, 15-20 years after it’s release, suggest/realize is the masterwork of one of our greatest living filmmakers. Which Babylon is. The film strings you along on a maniacally glorious thrill ride for so long you might begin questioning the film’s purpose, only to hit you with one of the best (and likely the most divisive) endings in years.…

The Whale 2022
From the get-go, the film has a clear problem with how it positions Charlie. Even before getting to the camera (which makes the problems so much worse), calling this The Whale is disgusting. I’ve seen the film; I know what the metaphor means, and that’s fine. But it’s a clear play at words, and the released poster all but affirms to any person looking at this film from the outside who would think our lead character is “The Whale”. For…

Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022
I wish I had something meaningful or insightful to explain why everyone is wrong and that this movie is a pile of shit, but I don’t. I can’t really condemn any of the filmmaking as lacking in quality. It’s not inherently poorly made. I just loathe everything about it. Watching it was simply a miserable experience and I can’t think of a single aspect of it that felt like it worked in a fully formed way. Worst of all, the…

Suspiria 2018
This was everything I wanted it to be. It was horrific, beautiful, pretentious, and just bloody perfect (figuratively and literally). It’s BY FAR my favorite movie of the year, and the only movie I’ve ever seen that could even come close to topping The Social Network as my favorite movie of all time.
I’m going to hold off till a rewatch to put this on my favorites list (edit: lmfao that didn’t happen) but seriously, I don’t think one watch…
