Great idea and acting, I felt it needed a bit more visceral camerawork.

A Game Tech Demo shot on 16mm film...and then the campaign gag at the end. Loved it

  • Past Lives

    Past Lives

Seriously beautiful sound design. A bit simple overall, but with impulses of genuine pondering. I feel like I was adding layers to this film in my head that had more impact than the narrative itself but it has its moments and vibes for sure.

    Battle Royale

A film of rare poetry, provocation and thrill. Rewatching it was a fantastic experience - also definitely prefer the theatrical cut for some reason, it’s just more sleek and nails the pacing

  • Missing

This is so much fun, twisty and unserious in all the right ways but also emotionally involving enough to keep it going. People are coming for Storm Reid but her and Nia Longs performance make the film work.

  • Adonis

Very on the nose and devoid of hope but nonetheless works well in the ways it straddles the journey between trauma and reinvention. Films about escorting, sexual performance and co. are often too sanitized and aim to make reductive statements with an outsider gaze so this one feels refreshing even when it’s mainly interested in the images that the premise has to offer. The ending is whatever

  • The World of Kanako

    The World of Kanako

There is this really strong editing sensibility between every coke-fueled cut that makes it work and everything is captured with a lot of detail. At some point it almost feels like revisiting the house of the Palmers in Twin Peaks. Carries itself well through its tropes for a while but some of the transgressions are just not interesting and the shocks get cheap, the story is more engaging when it just moves. I was asking myself if there was gonna be a perspective from Kanako but alas...mind you, Gone Girl came out the same year...

  • Multi-Facial

The self-consciousness only goes so far but an interesting watch for sure

  • Old

A flaccid but formally curious film by M. Night, the disorientation and inability to process which the story encompasses, does translate into the sensibilities of the filmmaking and the viewing experience - which is short-lived and intense. Unfortunately, there is a lack of detail in the individual scenes, and a lack of chemistry between the characters and their fate. The trippy/molded nature of the narrative, doesn't fit to what the film tells in its imaginative but rather isolated thoughts about…

Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too

This could’ve been so much cooler I feel like the concepts of this show are always just so limited…and don’t lead anywhere. This is fun at times, but more often it’s a snooze and not so imaginative
