Midnight Mass

Midnight Mass ★★★★

"Remember we are dust, and to dust we shall return."

Midnight Mass carries a weight equivalent to being put underneath an ocean and being plummeted with the force of a billion tons of water overhead. A scent of heavy sorrow and an echo of profound emptiness is contained within its shell. It is indeed miraculous how Mike Flanagan cuffed the narrative to not let it derail into a cheesy-gorefest. Instead, he offered an atmospheric mood piece while tackling organized religion and the consequences that misled faith would have on an entire community.

Very evidently, Flanagan has taken a leaf from his own life and poured the experiences with laborious sincerity into the work. Emotionally stirring, poignant and meditative, Midnight Mass pushes the meaning of horror in an ambitious dance of morality, death, fanaticism, grief and guilt.
