Tetsuo: The Iron Man

Tetsuo: The Iron Man ★★★★

Taking a Cronenbergian obsession with the grotesqueries of the body but marrying it to a narrative abstraction that doesn't come near enough to reality to become goofily pretentious (well, not in the sense that I often find Cronenberg's stuff, which takes itself so seriously that it doesn't seem to realise that the plot of Videodrome is nonsense. What I'm saying is, this film has a scene in which the main character's penis turns into a drill, but it manages to be funny and horrifying, which comes from a self-awareness and willingness to sacrifice any attempts at narrative logic for something more instinctual), Tetsuo: The Iron Man is a visceral ride through post-industrial anxiety - and is legitimately freaky.
