Castle Freak

Castle Freak ★★★½

Aside from one narratively justifiable but gratuitously graphic scene of sexual violence, Castle Freak is a pulpy but adult exploration of desire and jealousy, all built around a delightfully old-school "forgotten freak loose in the old house" plot. Barbara Crampton is impressive in a limited role, and Jeffrey Combs tears into his pathetic thirst with a camp that remains convincing - but it's Jonathan Fuller as the titular Freak who kills it, eliciting both fear and empathy in basically every moment he's onscreen.

Stuart Gordon remains an under-heralded director.
