Blade Runner

Blade Runner ★★★½

The Final Cut

I'm finally giving this the rewatch it deserves to prep me for the rewatch I feel 2049 deserves even more. I don't know if I'm ready to say that I get it, and I definitely need more viewings down the line, but my opinion of this movie has already risen dramatically as it went from mind numbingly boring to exceptionally intriguing after a 2nd viewing. To be honest I was scared I still wouldn't like it and it would kill my hype going back into Denis' take on the series, but Ridley Scott's 2019 feels immensely fleshed out and alive, and I found myself more captivated by the logistics of this world than any plot attempting to edge the story forward.

On the other side of things, I found everything about J.F. Sebastian (especially his "friends") really jarring and disjointed from the world - it makes perfect sense, sure. If we can create replicants indistinguishable from humans, why couldn't we make living toys? It works on paper, but on screen it's just really odd and doesn't feel like it belongs in this gritty futuristic L.A.

Overall, I definitely don't think it's the masterpiece everyone else seems to see it as, but I still feel confident that more rewatches will continue to improve my opinions on Blade Runner. If it keeps improving at it's current pace, it'll be a masterpiece by my 5th viewing.
