How do you try to surpass one of the greatest classics in cinema?
You don't, you just try to take a timeless story, update it, make minor changes, cast the contemporary equivalent of Setsuko Hara (the wonderful Yu Aoi), and just make a great film.
Thanks Yoji Yamada for helping me introduce Ozu's wonderful story to my anti-B&W family and for giving me the chance to re-live some of the magic of Tokyo Story in a new light. I look forward to watching more of your films as you seem like a master veteran craftsmen based on the two films I've seen. Time to track down your famous Tora-san films.
