I like movies. It’s definitely possible I overestimate how much I liked any given movie, and I’m ok with that.

    The Shawshank Redemption

“There’s not a a day goes by that I don’t feel regret. Not because I’m in here, or because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then, a young, stupid kid who committed a terrible crime. I wanna talk to him. I wanna try to talk some sense into him — tell him the way things are. But I can’t. That kid’s long gone and this old man is all that’s left. I gotta live…

    The Batman

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

TL;DR: The Batman makes the caped crusader feel fresh, despite 8 previous live-action adaptations. It’s my favorite version of the character and I can’t wait to see it again.

I’ll start by saying that the detective genre is perhaps my favorite genre of film, books, and television. When I heard that Matt Reeves was developing his Batman script to focus on the detective aspect of the character, my excitement compounded exponentially. Spiderhead is all over the place is a really fun way, especially early in the film up to a little past the midway point. The final third is pretty messy and feels very rushed. Ultimately, it takes a fair amount away from the experience.

Chris Hemsworth is incredible to watch throughout, though. Such a fun performer.

  • Uncharted

Uncharted isn’t an actively bad movie. It’s a safely below average adventure movie with charming actors. I didn’t dislike this movie on its own terms.

That said, it’s such a slap in the face to fans of the magnificent Uncharted series of video games (like myself). It doesn’t work as an adaptation, and it only kind of works as it’s own thing. Do better, Sony.

    Everything Everywhere All at Once

The most creative film I’ve seen in a long, long time. Maybe ever. It’s everything you could hope for in a movie, and somehow also more.

Please go see this in theaters, it absolutely deserves it.

    The Green Mile

I recently rewatched The Shawshank Redemption for the first time in a long while (review here, if you’re so inclined), and it made me want to go back and watch Frank Darabont’s other Stephen King adaptation, The Green Mile.

This movie isn’t as refined as Shawshank, but it remains a moving film about death, the futility of vengeance, guilt, and atonement. Performances are pretty great across the board. Tom Hanks is obviously a genius, but his supporting cast does a really…
