Evil Dead II

Evil Dead II ★★★★½

Halloween Movie Fest 2018

Evil Dead 2 delivers a perfect zany combination of laughs and scares!

There are two kinds of people in this world ... ones that prefer Evil Dead 2 and those that are more into 'Army of Darkness', and I have always been an Evil Dead 2 guy. I remember when my uncle first introduced me to this definitive classic from Writer and Director Sam Raimi. I did not know what to make of it at first, but by the time we see Ash's girlfriend rise from the dead and start dancing around, I was laughing so hard and was blown away how a horror flick more could be so silly and fun.

"We are the things that were and shall be again! Ahahahaha! Spirits of the book! We want what is yours! LIFE! Dead by dawn! Dead by dawn!

Bruce Campbell is incredible Ash, as this everyday guy who after reading from the book of the dead has the battle the forces of evil wielding a chainsaw on his hand. I think the first half of the movie is the strongest, with Ash being pushed to the edge of sanity with the evil possessing him and then playing some seriously funny mind games with him. Including that amazing battle against his own hand.

"Gimme back my hand... GIMME BACK MY HAND!"

Some of the effects are pretty rough but some how work well when paired with how crazy and over the top the movie is. This mostly goes for the stop motion scenes and that rear projection shot of Ash calling out on the cliff after he sees that the evil has trapped him by taking out the bridge. On the other hand many of the gore effects hold up pretty well, with all that blood and some great looking creatures.

"Even now we have your darling Linda's soul, as she suffers in torment ... You're going DOWN!"

I have seen Evil Dead 2 countless times and the laughs never get old, and it was a lot creepier than I remembered. It is so unique that Raimi decided to remake his original Evil Dead movie, just with a hilarious new twist on it. I am really looking forward to returning to 'Army of Darkness' to see if I enjoy it any more, since I have only seen it once and was a little underwhelmed by it.

"Recite the passages... dispel the evil... save my soul... and your own minds!"

Thanks for reading!
Happy movie watching.... SKOL!
