Executive Order

Executive Order ★★★½

It's a bit clunky and about 15 minutes too long, but I found this totally engaging with some really powerful performances anchoring this timely, if a little underdeveloped story.

I do appreciate that the film, while showing heinous government/police action and scenes of violence, chooses to forgo showcasing moments of blood and gore and allows the story to play out without being overly traumatizing with regard to the use of on-screen violence. Perhaps others will wind up wishing the film took those elements farther, but I honestly found it quite refreshing.

Between this, Divine Love, and Bacurau, I've been really enjoying the hyper-political sci-fi films coming out of Brazil over the last year. More, please!
