Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Portrait of a Lady on Fire ★★★★

“When you’re observing me, who do you think I’m observing?”

Céline Sciamma’s latest is a feast for the eyes. It’s a richly textured and poetic piece of cinema in which its images speak louder than its words; a tale of desire, passion and self-discovery in 18th century France that’s erotic, subtle and utterly timeless. It’s a film that wholeheartedly portrays the power of love and art without falling into the pompous trappings of many other period romances. I’m deeply moved.
