The two stars are for the stunts and the audacity of shooting an apocalyptic future out at sea... however the character development is shocking, we spend over 2 hours with Kevin Costner only to never really get to know him beyond his being 'a bit of a prick with gills' (and I usually stan Kevin Costner). Is it about teaching, passing on the tradition of culture, living as mahu, her relationship with her husband or the protection of Hawaiian lands? Still a worthwhile watch nonetheless.

Watched as part of BFI Flare 2021, because I wanted to support the festival and assumed gay soviet pilots during the Cold War would be a good time, but no amount of strong jawlines and uniforms could save this poorly written, cliche-riddled, achingly tired story of forbidden love. The film had no sense of threat (considering we were dealing with the KGB), the film was in English with bad Russian accents, there were a few dodgy wigs and CGI planes…
