This is why I don't like to visit home very much.

Sidney Prescott is finally feeling free and has written a book about healing and moving on. When she goes to Woodsboro to start her book tour and visit her Aunt and cousin, Ghostface returns and meta world expansion ensues. In addition to focusing on our traditional survivors the film also spends a lot of the time with the cousin, Jill's, group of friends so that young people won't have to just look at older uggos for an hour and forty minutes. The teen group which include performances from Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere and Rory Culkin is surprisingly entertaining and is part of what makes this film work.

As a general rule, even if it's been a decade, I still prefer a sequel to a pure reboot. I like this film because I like all of the scream films because they are all pretty decent to good. So when a film like Scream 4 comes out that is going to have to address "meta fatigue" what does it choose to do? It fucking doubles down on meta and I liked it. The extended open is great fan service/fan taunting that continues throughout the film by showing parts of prior films but in new and interesting ways. It's a quality that I think only the Happy Death Day movies also pulled off in the last decade or so, in my opinion.

A big part of the success of Scream 4 is the loaded cast of actors such as Anthony Anderson, Mary McDonnel, Marley Shelton, Allison Brie, Adam Brody, Anna Pacquin, Kristen Bell, Lucy Hale in addition to the normal survivors and teens mentioned earlier,

There is also a well thought out script that updates the Woodsboro world, along with the attack of a killer like Ghosface. Ghostface now has to get around caller ID and various copy cats but has the advantage of easy video access to make his kills go public. One of the things that makes the Scream sequels work for me is that they all figure out a way to put Sidney into a situation that makes sense and creates a natural transition and this is not exception.

Yes watch it.
