And the Oscar goes to.... Delroy Lindo.

For me this is high mid-tier Spike Lee, which still makes it pretty great. 97% movie, 3% documentary, Da 5 Bloods is a touching and exciting film about four veterans that go on a journey back to Vietnam. The 2 hour plus length is used to develop the characters of an outstanding cast and establish an interesting treasure hunt subplot. It's a humanizing and cathartic film about making up for past mistakes and chasing ghosts and it has a surreal vibe to it that I really enjoy. Delroy Lindo and Jonathan Majors' father/son chemistry is special and grounds the entire film.

Lee is trying to make films that break through to all audiences and contain teachable moments and by those standards I'd say that this is a success.

P.S. It would seem that I am required to say whether I think Spike Lee should have used de-aging technology for the war flashbacks. The answer is of course no because that technology sucks.

P.P.S. Some reviewers have criticized how specific this is to Trump, at parts, and the use of past footage to clarify and reinforce points. I believe those reviewers are incorrect.
