I don't understand how a movie with a straightforward plot could be a work of art. Damien Chazelle definitely did magic with his talent (and screenplay), and along with the extraordinary performances and unique musicalization of the score, Whiplash became one of the best movies ever.
The tension in this movie, especially in the car accident scene and in the finale, is some of the best I've seen in my cinematic history.
