    The Four Times

    ★★★★½

After watching Le Quattro Volte it was early evening. I walked outside and pulled some small splits from our wood stack in preparation to build the evening fire. I brought them into the kitchen, laid them near the stove, and gathered some dry kindling like I always do.

I opened the stove door, and delicately shoveled the top layer of fine ash and dust and carefully deposited it into the ash pail beside the stove like I always do. The…

    C.R.A.Z.Y.

I grew up an only child, so never experienced the dynamics of a large family. However, both my parents came from large families, so I could see the dynamics between them and my uncles and aunts from a different perspective. My best friend growing up, like our films protagonist, was the second youngest in a brood of five. I recognized a lot of things from these families in C.R.A.Z.Y.

    Writer / Director Jean-Marc Vallée couches C.R.A.Z.Y. as a coming of…

    Slap Shot

    ★★★★

With the post season success of our own Peterborough Petes Junior Hockey team ( facing playoff elimination tonight ... Go Petes Go! ) and the traditional folding of the Leafs in the first round, I thought Slap Shot would be an appropriate pick.

You can really see why Paul Newman considers this his favourite film, it must have been a blast to make, especially acting with 'The Hansons'. It's so true. Whenever I've been to a Petes game, nothing fires…

    Eyes Wide Shut

    ★★★★★

I vividly remember seeing Eyes Wide Shut for the first time. It was opening day back in 1999. I went in with a mixture of anticipation and sadness. Anticipation because Kubrick had pronounced this to be the best film he’s ever made. Sadness because I knew it was the last time I would see a Kubrick for the first time.

After the show was finished, my friend and I walked to a café. We barely spoke about it. I was…
