The Crowd

The Crowd ★★★★★

Revealing shot very early on as four focal characters each ascend a stairwell past the camera after emerging from a throng of people, leaving the crowd behind. It's not a complex motif, and one that has undoubtedly been built upon in the near-eighty years since but its hard to overstate how affecting the images of autonomous beings as non-individuals is, especially when one considers the bombast with which Vidor presents the city -> something that literally cannot stop, cannot fall apart. It's the architecture here that really got me though, a scale that wouldn't be expanded upon until 1933's King Kong.
