    One of the better experimental films of its time in part because it deconstructs the process of watching a medium of visual deceit in its own right -- the 'narrative' frame is obtuse and structureless which is the only thing holding this back.

    Extremely tightly plotted and in this regard both much stronger than the first and a defining ‘Rian Johnson movie’ (his obsession with self-contained cleverness becomes its own kind of recursive formal joke in the second half of this film), but as a result of the tight plotting is significantly less fun than the loose first entry. Johnson’s eye is always bending out of the way for comedy rather than impact which is part of the freewheeling tone of these movies…
