Playtime claims to be a comedy, but the goal of any comedic film is to make the audience laugh, which I believe it thoroughly lacked throughout its nearly two hour runtime. The first hour of Playtime consists of a lack of connection between any characters which makes it difficult to be invested in the plot, not to mention the unfunny dry humor that led me to nod off multiple times. On the other hand, the second half of the film actually builds connections between characters, and attempts to be funny. But these attempts always seemed to fall short with jokes being thrown left and right to see if they would stick, with nearly none actually hitting the mark. I believe the effectiveness of any good comedy comes from its ability to make jokes that contribute to the plot and overall meaning of the story, for instance the Mel Brook's classic Blazing Saddles does this very well. Playtime on the other hand leaves you nearly asleep after the first hour and then overcompensated with unfunny jokes throughout the second. If you're looking for a film that will make you laugh, I don't recommend you watch Playtime.
