After watching Moonlight, I can safely say that it rightfully earned the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film's captivating story of three different phases of Chiron's life keeps you hooked from start to finish, as you're immersed in his world and see first hand how he struggles to fit in with society and to come to terms with his own identity. Although captivating performances such as Mahershala Ali's portrayal of Juan keep the audience connected with the story, I felt that the cinematography did a fantastic job at keeping the audience immersed in the setting of lower-income neighborhoods of Miami. The film's use of hand-held cameras when characters are walking or interacting outside adds a sense of realism because as opposed to a film with still shots, hand-held cameras mimic what our eyes see as we move through space, so the audience gets a real sense of what its like to be in the scene with the characters. All in all, Moonlight's compelling storyline and the added realism from its cinematography make it a must see film that will keep you hooked from start to finish no matter how many times you watch it.
