If it wasn't for Moonlight, Damien Chazelle's La La Land would've most certainly won the Oscar for Best Picture. La La Land tells the heartwarming yet tear jerking story of a young couple, Sebastian and Mia, as they fight to maintain their love for each other while they try to achieve that own separate dreams. Ultimately they each achieve their own dreams but at the expense of their relationship. I think La La Land is such as unique film because of its story which favors the characters achieving their own dreams rather than stay together as a couple. While most romance movie storylines result in the couple battling their conflict and falling in love, La La Land completely changes what we expect from the genre. Breaking the characters up at the end of the film showed the audience that although they're no longer in a relationship, they both needed each other to achieve their dreams.
