HAPPILY does so many things I love, which is good, and none of them felt like they were there just for the hell of it, which is even better.
Everything here is very considered and deliberate. I’m not damning the script by saying it wouldn’t have worked half so well without this direction. I’m saying thank god Bendavid got to direct it himself so he could do it the way he meant it, with all the bite and fully leaned…

What a hard movie to make so well! And to not even notice the difficulty while watching!
The remixing of the story here is something I’ve seen a couple people bump up against, but it lent the whole thing such power! To remove the straight line of it all and to bring the whole of this story all at once, flitting from youthful hope and angst to older disappointment and truer hope, god damn! God damn! I love this! So grand and so airy! So full and so alive!
