Jordy The Movie Guy’s review published on Letterboxd:
It’s really disappointing to me how some of these movies fly under the radar due to the streaming overload we live in right now. I heard the same thing from a lot of people, they didn’t even realize this came out today, AND that it was directed by James Wan, like SHAME on WB for their piss poor marketing man!!
I think Malignant will work for some people, but will probably fall flat for most. If you’re looking for a horror film that seeks to terrify you, this probably won’t do that? It seems like Wan is going less for Conjuring and more for Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead 2. It’s very campy and corny, but it’s also really really funny. I think he intended this to be a homage to the more over the top action horror films of the 80’s, and this definitely delivered on that promise.
It’s a goofy film with a ridiculous concept, but you either have to leave that logic at the door or go into it not knowing what it’s about. I did the latter and didn’t even realize it was a James Wan movie till the credits so it definitely surprised me! There’s a lot of creative camera work at play and I think it shows that he had a lot of fun making it. He must’ve took his Aquaman money and just said “screw it, let’s do something fun and cool”. And yeah, I think this does the job! I don’t think the sentimental aspects of the story work as well as the schlock does but when it works, it’s a good time. Definitely one of the biggest surprises of the year.
