    Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

    ★★★½

Chadwick Bozeman. Wow. This performance makes me mourn the projects and performances we could’ve had from such a talented man. Best Actor? Yes. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were 2 Posthumous Oscar Wins this year for Bozeman in Ma Rainey and Jack Fincher for Mank.

  • Mank

    Mank

    ★★★★

I actually really enjoyed this, but it definitely reaches to a certain niche audience that has an appreciation for hollywood and the importance of the behind-the-scenes aspects of film. I hope Amanda Seyfried gets a win for her performance and Fincher’s father (poetically) wins for the screenplay.

I didn’t know I wanted Greta Gerwig and Adam Driver in a movie together until now

  • Cimarron

    Cimarron

I knew in the first five minutes this was gonna be a brutal 2 hours of slow storytelling, racist white people, and harmful stereotypes of the 30s. I couldn’t even finish D.W Griffith’s Birth of a Nation because of how racist and ridiculous it was, and this wasn’t too far off. The only reason it didn’t get a 0 was because Irene Dunne had a great performance.

  • Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square

Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square

So terribly chaotic, but I must support the literal angel Dolly’s anti-capitalist, Stars Hollow-esque, 8-year-old bartending Christmas movie

  • The Last Emperor

    The Last Emperor

    ★★★★

The Last Emperor is a really incredible epic biopic. One of the few great biopics that purposefully makes their protagonist unlikable, yet also effectively establishes several enemies that make one sympathetic to PuYi. His stubbornness, spoiled nature, narcissism, and, at certain points, cruelty characterize him as an antihero, though his imposed, sheltered, cultivated childhood in which he was often groomed for such behavior portrays him as a more human, and thus tragic, character.

Around the World in Eighty Days

    I have 2 questions:
    1. How did Giant lose Best Picture to THIS??
    2. Shirley MacLaine sweetie why on earth did you take this role?

I like the message of the film about seeing the world and how much we as humans can accomplish when we set our minds to it, but overall it was pretty bland. Seems more like a movie shown to elementary school kids to teach them about adventure and the most stereotypical portrayals of different nations around the globe.

  • Hillbilly Elegy

    Hillbilly Elegy

...this is really what Amy Adams and Glenn Close want their Oscars for? Objectively, it’s not a great movie. The pacing is awkward, the writing is sub-par, and besides Adams and Close the acting isn’t there. Then I can go on about the insulting sociopolitical undertones and messages of the film. It just reduces poverty to individual choices and creates a dangerous caricature of Appalachia as poor, drug addicted, and abusive at their own behest.
    The film is an interesting…
