    Spielberg on a tangent from his America-boner makes an incredibly watchable, completely unexpected PKD adaptation. He should have stuck with this and left AI to better hands as he’s much more capable with a pulp action plot than the complexity AI demanded. Minority Report is good fucking fun, way over the top, shot through the gauzy aesthetic end-of-history lens of the new millennium (see ethan hawke Hamlet, vanilla sky, etc) mashed together with post-sovietism (somewhat more expected from a spielberg take on an ‘authoritarian america ‘what-if’).

    Not as ambitious as Mononoke or Spirited Away but still fantastical, not as personal and humanistic as The Wind Rises or From Up on Poppy Hill yet still branded by the politics of its creators, Porco Rosso is a nearly perfect soft-noir adventure whose narrative and characters are shot through with Miyazaki’s by-then polished execution.

    There are strains and details elaborated from his earlier work present, and also the seeds of ideas he will later articulate much more forcefully, but…

    not as top tier in the genre as Michael Clayton (almost nothing is tho save Margin Call), but it does the job of making you as righteously angry and nearly overwhelmed by a state whose regulatory and judicial apparatuses are so clearly at the service of capital at the expense of its people, who are essentially tortured and murdered by chemical barons.
