Diamonds Are Forever 1971
After the more straight-faced "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," you'll be entitled to compensation for the tonal whiplash of "Diamonds Are Forever." An older-looking Connery returns for a decidedly featherweight throwback to the goofier Bond entries (there's a ridiculous desert chase involving security guards on three-wheelers and some bubble-topped, faux-NASA contraption). Lisa and the Devil 1973
Irritating in the sense that it should've either A) fully committed to its narrative storytelling elements from the very beginning; or B) fully embraced its dreamlike qualities from the very beginning. (B) is where "Lisa and the Devil"'s greatest strengths lie, coasting from one seemingly inexplicable encounter after another, punctuated by Bava's signature flair for color, stylish compositions, and subtly unsettling imagery (mannequins, anyone?). But the film frequently trips over itself to drop expository bricks that muddy the pace and take away from the mystery. But still, all that style is something to see.
