The Northman

The Northman ★★★★½

Robert Eggers’ films have been something that I’ve more respected than truly enjoyed. His talents lie in all the technical aspects of cinematography and sound and the research he does to craft a world and themes accurate to the time period. They’ve all been really cool to experience even if I don’t totally get what they’re about on my initial watches. Which is why The Northman, a straightforward revenge epic is much more my speed and makes for my favorite film of his yet. It may be his most accessible film, but it doesn’t feel like Eggers sacrificed any of his style as he imbues Norse mythology into so much of the story. After sitting with it for a couple of hours, my mind and heart are still racing from the visceral brutality that Eggers presents. The Northman is a fantastic film that will definitely be one of my favorites of the year.
