First Cow

First Cow ★★★★½

Let's rest here

for just a little while.

Reichardt feels like a genuinely independent filmmaker in that she doesn't appear to be swayed much by the temptation of budget to increase the scale of her stories- but rather hone in on the craft of details. Neither does she ever feel the need to change her natural directing rhythm. For a story revolving around opportunism and ambition, it seems to counteract these values with a languid sense of timing, that there's nowhere else to be but right here, right now, in this moment. Wealth is impermanent but friendship, although sometimes rearing its head too seldom, will always return to our lives in the strangest ways.
