Chef ★½

I get that Chef’s plot is a metaphor for John Favreau’s career. This is his break from big budget Hollywood, a passion project. But the film is filled with the awful Hollywood cliches anyway.

Every character works to help the main character achieve his goals, inner peace and happiness. But what’s in it for any of them??? There’s a manic pixie dream girl , plus a manic pixie dream ex-wife, a manic pixie dream best friend, a manic pixie dream ex-wife’s other ex husband, and even a manic-pixie dream social network. Everyone around this protagonist aligns to give him a better life. The film is supposed to be about rebirth, getting back to your roots. Carl Casper just tweets and he has everything he ever wanted. He hardly struggles at all.
