Each Oliver Stone movie only works for me when the point it’s trying to make gets lost in its own psychosis + spectacle. Not the case here. It ends up exploring the same themes as Network but less funny, smaller scale, and somehow feeling less real. Who are these callers?
Haven’t watched Natural Born Killers since high school, but I feel like that’s where he knocks these themes out of the park? Meaning he gestures at them, and I stop paying attention because the movie just rocks.
It wants to be Eternal Sunshine directed by Edgar Wright, but it’s Cloud Atlas directed by Deadpool.
The tragic irony of Spielberg remaking West Side Story—a liberal fantasy about how racial progress happens through individuals falling in love—by copying all the boring, irritating parts of the 1961 original, as if to say how much better America was sixty years ago: this was absolutely lost on this director who is no doubt fascinated by the incredibly stupid images he’s wasted most of his adult life and billions of dollars exposing innocent people to.
