God, I miss parties.
"Lovers Rock" proves Steve McQueen is a master storyteller, even with only an hour to tell said story. In all of his features, including this one, he is able to capture intimacy so effortlessly through long-shots and close-ups that feel natural and real. The performances he is able to get out of his actors are always phenomenal. Especially the performance from newcomer(?) Amarah-Jae St Aubyn. This perfectly captures the energy of a night out; good and bad. I swear I've met every single person at this party in my own life.
Night One of NYFF was great! Can't wait for the other two McQueen cuts in October and hopefully the entire anthology early next year.
The next two films I'll be watching this Saturday; "Smooth Talk" (1985) and "The Calming" (2020)
