A romantic drama based on a novel by Delia Owens. A slow burn that’s beautifully told and a sight for the eyes.

Jones as the main lead gave an outstanding performance as someone who was abandoned, shunned and survived in the marshes. Before this I’d only seen Jones in Fresh and Under the Banner of Heaven and I adore her in them, so I knew that she would deliver here. Can’t wait to see what else she does in the future. The supporting cast also delivered brilliantly, and it was nice to see the chemistry they shared with Jones.

The cinematography is gorgeous the way the film highlights nature showing you the beauty of the location, the colours within, and also the skyline at different parts of the day a visual feast. Also the soundtrack was a delight to listen to and worked well in bringing this film to life.

One thing that lets the film down is that because it is a slow burn some parts of the film do drag, and it starts to feel like it’s not going anywhere. I think that they spent too much time in telling the backstory and not enough on the present. I understand they are trying to tell a story but I think the pacing was a bit slow. The movie would have worked better if it had been a 90min runtime.

Recommend – yes over all I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
