if you're queer and want to go to a movie with me at the music box or gene siskel, hmu!
I LOVED this!!! I'm very lucky to have seen it as part of the Reeling Film Festival, at Chicago Filmmakers, with Stephen Winter in attendance, doing literally THE most fabulous Q&A I have ever seen after the screening.
Truly a new favorite. THIS is the queer representation I love!
(Chicago: you can see it at Facets on the 28th! Everyone else: it's streaming on the Criterion channel!)
I liked this a lot! A bit more than I was expecting to, actually. I also don't regret waiting so long to watch it--it's nice to absorb a movie on its own terms, removed from all the hype, discourse, and awards cycles.
I did find a few of the supporting characters distractingly goofy, and not all the story beats worked for me (the knife scene? huh?). But there was enough emotional maturity and gravitas to keep me invested. I was…
REALLY liked this! Shockingly faithful to Pride and Prejudice (give or take a couple supporting characters), but also perceptive toward contemporary cultural norms in a way that I see many present-day films try and fail to achieve. The zingers landed! The sexy parts were sexy! Class hierarchies were observed and dissected! Had a great time. I anticipate horny gay men and Jane Austen aficionados will eat it up. And Joel Kim Booster, if you’re reading this, I would like to kiss you at the after-party.
