    What a strange, sour movie. A romantic comedy where the romance feels unconvincing and the comedy is constantly fighting a losing battle against some truly wretched story beats. Maybe I was just having a day—the sea of 5-star reviews and Academy plaudits suggests so—but I walked out of this desperately clinging to the geometric perfection of the office and a handful of perfect lines—"I was jinxed from the word go. The first time I was ever kissed was in a cemetery"—and trying to forget most everything else. Guess that's just how it crumbles sometimes, cookie-wise.

    Charles Carson is a perfect documentary subject: A rural eccentric and unwitting outsider artist with an absurd sense of humour and a radical attitude towards both life and death. As somebody who grew up on a farm in East Devon (and was born in Somerset!), I met or heard rumours about many odd ducks like him, and it made me unexpectedly nostalgic to revisit them.
