  • The Joy of Life

    The Joy of Life 2005

★★★★★ Rewatched by Kevin Barbella 04 Jan 2023

A standout from the golden age of essay films. Stunning photography, associative storytelling, and a wonderful disquisition on queer desire.

If you’re in NJ, you can catch a screening of this film (plus two Olson shorts) at the Flemington DIY — 7:00 PM, January 28th.

The first in a series I programmed, the other films are here.

“It’s all so exquisitely bittersweet and almost unbearable, but it’s not. You come back to this state again and again and although it’s melodramatic, this heightened sense of emotion is so real and so clear, compared to the muddy…

I don’t know how I stumbled across this but going forward if my porn does not contain klezmer music and cheeky Yiddish narration I don’t want it 😤

logging again so you get the idea - this is part of my psyche, i see it a lot, it's on in my brain all the time. the ways in which butch dysphoria can mimic* femme dysphoria. the ways in which i feel resplendent sometimes and just awful others. i keep trying to get my emotions out here concisely and poetically, but like. what am i going to say about sometimes that you can't immediately feel. it's intimate, it's heartbreaking, it feels ripped out of my brain. here we go. <3

*hm, not mimic. what is it when two things grow together?
