zack snyder may have his various shortcomings, but one thing the man inarguably excels at is making his movies feel giant. i mean that in the sense that there's no one in the business who can give their superhero movie the weight and scale of a greek epic quite like snyder can. this movie is basically a culmination of every snyder instinct towards this mythologization of his own characters he tends to do, characters he can finally define and explore fully. and explore he does, wandering from one to the other throughout the massive four hour runtime and examining every emotional intricacy that led to each of the characters being where they are, a drastic improvement from whedon's version of the film. this is a passion project by and large, one that almost feels like a breakthrough for creative freedom this genre noticeably lacks. now i just need a snyder cut for the owls of gahoole.
