Moonlight

Moonlight ★★★½

"My name is Chiron, people call me little."

Moonlight has been getting a lot of praise since its release. Each year there's bound to be at least a few highly acclaimed films that I don't really get the hype for. This is one of those. Don't get me wrong, I did like the movie, but it's nothing special in my opinion. The story and structure are solid, as is the acting, and the film is well made. Many people expect Mahershala Ali to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He is good and plays a likable character, but much like the movie itself I didn't think he did anything special. Naomie Harris was great though and will be a deserving nominee for Supporting Actress. Perhaps my biggest gripe, is that the film seems to be building up to something, but it never really has a payoff. We see this person's life in three stages starting when he's a kid and ending when he's an adult, but we never really get to know him that well and then it just kind of ends. I know it sounds like I'm hating on the movie, but again, I did like it overall. 7/10
