The Reel House’s review published on Letterboxd:
Steve McQueen knows how to create a compelling atmosphere without any real characters but mostly with visual storytelling and the power of music.
“Lovers Rock” was a film that at first I struggled getting invested but by the end the “slice of life” hangout atmosphere left me feeling completely immersed. There are parts in the film that feel disorientating to convey the disjointed blur of a party.
Steve McQueen never misses. If you want something that is quick, breezy and rather light all the whilst still touching on some deeply interesting topics : go give “Lovers Rock” a watch !
