Halloween ★★★★★

Two things really quickly, because two things turn what could have been just another low-budget genre exercise into one of the true landmarks of horror.

One, this movie is an absolute triumph of craft, with long takes, composition in depth and an unfailing mastery of pace keeping you on your toes, peering over the shoulders of the people onscreen to see if danger’s approaching.

Two, the script makes Michael Myers more than just another masked psycho with an urge to kill, tapping into an almost mythological suggestiveness to turn him into a figure of inhuman, unstoppable evil, the kind where the best case scenario is just keeping him at bay.

“It was the boogeyman.”
“As a matter of fact… it was.”
