I’ve been going through a major Beach Boys kick after checking out the incredible podcast, Sail On, which covers the history of The Beach Boys chronologically, in a very thorough way.
Love & Mercy does have a lot in common with some of the worst music biopics out there. It covers the more controversial and dramatic periods of Brian Wilson’s life and has its own fair share of cheesy, expository dialogue, mixed with minor reimaginings of the boy’s timeline.

I had the pleasure of seeing this on 35mm at the Vista last night, courtesy of Craig Hammill and his exceptional Secret Movie Club. David Lynch created this masterpiece over the course of seven years, with the average amount of five people on crew. AFI funded this project, throughout and beyond Lynch’s tenure at the school. This is undoubtedly the greatest student film ever made.
The amount of time, love and care each person involved put into this project shines…
My most anticipated 4k, and it looks absolutely stunning. It was hard holding off on watching it until Bekah and I could sit down and watch it together. One of my favorite films of all time. Cinema’s greatest slapstick family ❤️
A beautiful melodrama about finding yourself disillusioned with everything you’ve worked your entire life to achieve. Douglas Sirk has not disappointed me yet.
Jakob Dylan tricks you into watching a super self-indulgent documentary about him liking music. There’s about 30 minutes of interviews that relate to how this doc has been advertised and the rest is Jakob covering songs of the time in an incredibly bland fashion. It’s worth it for the interviews though, there are some great gems of anecdotes in there. I’d just fast forward through all the Jakob Dylan.
