NETFLIX (ULTRA 4K)
"Shall we begin?"
Its clear that Wingard relished making this film, he brings his aesthetic to the table and it works wonders. However, Death Note while both fun and immersive has the most blatant structure and pacing issues you'll ever see. The first 45min tries to pull off what should've been a feature film itself and the result is a rushed, stretched mess. Very little character development occurs and the audience are just plunged into the deep end. The tone shifts are also rather jarring, one minute the film is shocking and then it wants to crack a joke, while it works on occasion a balance just isn't felt.
