Horse Girl

Horse Girl ★★★

I couldn’t not think of Donnie Darko as this film went from a story about a shy and awkward girl that loves horses to...well, something else.

So, if you are a fan of Donnie Darko I imagine you might dig Horse Girl. It is not to say that if you didn’t like Donnie Darko then you won’t like Horse Girl.

Okay, enough about Donnie Darko.

I did enjoy Horse Girl quite a bit. Alison Brie is very good at fleshing our her character, Sarah. Sarah is a good-hearted person, just slightly out of step with social rhythms. The people around her genuinely care for her, even those that find her to be trying.

Sarah finds her grip on reality starting to slip. Given her family history with mental health she is starts to become nervous. The film does a really great job capturing that feeling of fear regarding mental health issues.

The fact that this film is able to go from a character story of an awkward girl to where it goes so effortlessly is impressive. I recommend checking it out.
