Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Portrait of a Lady on Fire ★★★★½

erotic like no other film this year, and a truly moving depiction of ~forbidden love~. i thought i was done with period-set queer romances that are doomed to be temporary, but Sciamma is such a sophisticated and thoughtful artist that every moment here is captured with passion and pathos. small things at first, that desperate run to the edge of the cliff, stealing glances next to each other with one obscured until they aren't. and then some of the most beautiful and heart-rending images i can imagine, images as memories (how will you remember me?) and as defiant documents. as alicia keys once sang, this girl is on fire.
