While I appreciate Andrew Dominik attempting a different approach to the traditional biopic, on the whole this film is something of an endurance test. Ana de Armas is very good, but at a bloated 166 minutes the film ends up feeling like torture porn. While I respect not sugar coating her tragically short life, it offers no real insight to the person she was - only the trauma she endured.
Of all the horror films to come out in the last 20 or so years, they all pale in comparison to Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.” So cleverly and intricately crafted, this film takes us on a journey that is still frightening after all these years.
