The Godfather

The Godfather ★★★½

That was a bit of a disappointment. It’s good and has some scenes that are absolutely great, but it just can’t get me excited about everything going on. Maybe it’s because most of the scenes I liked the most are also the ones I’ve seen many times before. Maybe it’s the runtime which drags it out. Maybe it’s the fact that I feel like the interesting relations between characters just never fully come alive or the lack of anything resembling depth with the female characters. It’s a gangster movie with gangsters that seldom interest me. Which isn’t to say there’s nothing interesting. There is and it is very aware of the pitfalls of their characters and their morality or lack thereoff. I guess it even succeeds in bringing across a certain grimness which on paper I should appreciate. However, only Al Pacino and Marlon Brando really caught my attention and have character development I cared for. Eventually the cast, good direction and strong scenes don’t make for a movie that fully convinces me of its masterpiece status. Especially when comparing it to the, in my eyes, way more unique and stunning trip of a movie Apocalypse Now is.
