Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★½

best picture nominees #5 - as of now my 4th choice out of the 8

this is masterful filmmaking. every single aspect of it is so brilliantly done, and is definitely one of the best films of the year. it tells an incredibly important story and each scene packs its own unique emotional punch. it's truly a phenomenal piece of art, which is something i can only say about very few films.

in terms of the oscars, it deserved every nomination it got, and in my opinion, deserved more. i love that both daniel kaluuya and lakeith stanfield got nominated because they've had amazing careers and both give stunning performances, but the fact that they're both in the supporting category doesn't really make sense to me (but i'm very excited to see daniel kaluuya win an oscar!!) i think dominique fishback is more than deserving of a nomination for supporting actress; she gives such a layered performance and holds a lot of the emotional weight of the film. i'm also confused as to how shaka king didn't get much recognition for his direction, as he's obviously a genius, but i'm glad he got acknowledged for original screenplay.

i'm very interested and excited to see what shaka king does next, because judging by this film alone, he's easily one of the most talented filmmakers in the industry.
