Scream ★★★★½

Scream is an absolutely awesome fifth installment in the franchise, with a great new set of characters, all while packing things we love about the series! The acting is great (Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Melissa Barrera, David Arquette, Neve Campbell, and Courteney Cox were the highlights), the score by Brian Tyler is haunting and chilling, the kills are absolutely brutal on screen, it’s very well paced, there’s some funny moments, it left me thinking about what’s gonna happen as the film progresses, and it’s extremely scary and filled with a lot of tension. The twists and turns were definitely well executed as well, the reveals are absolutely insane, and they made so much sense. Knowing how the series is meta, I loved how it deals with “requels” and toxic fandoms in a way that fits the story without feeling like it’s on the nose. The social commentary on toxic fandoms and other things are really well tackled in the movie. It also honors Wes Craven (director of the previous 4 movies) in a touching way, and it feels like a love letter to the Scream series. All in all, Scream (2022) is the best Scream movie since the original 1996 film, and it’s an absolutely marvelous slasher movie!
