JackBurton1234’s review published on Letterboxd:
I had a long week.
I dealt with so much shit this past week and all I wanted to do was go watch a goddamn movie.
So I go there I sit down and I expected it to be a nice normal viewing experience where everyone remains quite and doesn’t talk.
But no!
Not only did one person talk. Everyone talked!
Everyone!
And I had to sit their in my seat and listen to a person who was high laugh at every scene, some random group of teens make edgy jokes, and just a ton of whispering.
I’m fed up right now.
My body is physically exhausted my mind is mentally just destroyed right now and now I have to deal with some bullshit from people in a theatre for 2 hours.
So now I’m not only exhausted but angry as well.
Now if you want my thoughts on the movie they may not fully be accurate due to the absolute shitstorm of a theatre experience I had but here they are:
It’s fine.
The bus fight is great.
The cast is great.
Tony Leung carries the entire film.
Awkafina is great as is the lead.
The music is great at some times but terrible at others.
The characters are pretty generic.
There was only one thing I didn’t see coming.
Which I won’t spoil if you haven’t seen it.
It’s an ok kinda twist on a wuxia type film.
The scene in the forest with Tony Leung at the start is basically just the scene from the Hero in the forest just less visually stunning emotional and interesting.
It’s an ok take on wuxia.
It doesn’t live up to the standard of any of the old martial films or wuxia films.
I don’t even want to compare them honestly there in completely different realms.
I have a higher standard for martial arts films though so don’t fully trust my opinion here you may enjoy it more than me.
The plot is predictable.
The end credits scenes felt like eternity.
I literally just didn’t care.
It didn’t help that I had to deal with the dipshits behind and in front of me talking.
And I don’t usually curse but if I get really really ticked off that’s when I tend to do it.
This is one of those cases.
I could go on for hours about the absolutely dumb atrocious shit I had to hear in the back and front of me while watching this but I won’t.
It’s not worth my energy.
I’ll give you this bit one guy went out loud laughing in the middle of the goddamn motherfucking movie “that looks like a Nickelodeon movie that’s so cool.”
I’ve had about enough for today I’m going to take a long sleep and watch a movie alone in the comfort of my home sometime this weekend.
Had a great experience watching To Catch a Thief again today only to have this horse shit experience afterwards.
Quick edit before I get the sleep I desperately need: the reason the wuxia didn’t work was the camera work was dull as shit. Wuxia is full of colors and emotions through those colors and or fights and this had none of that. It all felt like corporate bullshit yet again. Get some better camera work Marvel I beg you. Don’t disrespect wuxia and martial arts film in general like this. This has no style. It gives a glimpse of style in the bus scene and then ruins it in every following fight and it gets worse and worse. Until eventually I sat there and I asked myself why I was even watching this. Then I remembered my main man Tony Leung. Sorry for that long rant I’m extremely unsatisfied right now.
Didn’t get my martial arts film/wuxia film, my good film going experience, or any relaxation.
Goodnight everyone.
