The Northman

The Northman ★★★½

Feels kind of hollow to me in the same way The Witch did, which can’t help but feeling like a bit of a disappointing regression after The Lighthouse, one of the most lively movies of the past few years, to say the least. Eggers is clearly interested in exploring the psychopathic nastiness and amoral violence that underpins both history and our conceptions of justice and righteousness, but I’m not sure he really succeeds in making his nihilistic thesis all that compelling. Maybe the problem is that it’s just not funny enough, his weird semi-historical dioramas seem to be a lot more gripping when they are full of zany Freudian dick jokes. Still, as a piece of brooding spectacle this is pretty great. Eggers sure knows how to compose a striking image, the production design is fetishistically detailed, almost to the point of horse shoe theorying itself into feeling kind of plastic, the violence is wonderfully gnarly, and Anya Taylor-Joy is very talented and very pretty. A good bad time at the pictures.
